My best music of 2019 playlist

It has become my habit that at the end of each year to put together a “best of” playlist of the music that I have been listening to, or has meant something, that year. Again I’ve used the music streaming service Spotify to pull together the playlist. So if you’d like to listen to it here is the full playlist of about seven and half hours of my best tracks of 2019. You can also…

People’s Vote March 19 October 2019

Last Saturday I once again took the train into London to join another People’s Vote march. I think this is the fifth of these that I have been on, and this one felt massive. There is always an argument about just how many people turn up to these things. I am sure there must be a way that you could accurately, and independently, estimate the attendance at such events. It would cut out the tedious…

Jonny Greenwood Prom

On Tuesday (10 September 2019) evening I traveled into London to go to the Royal Albert Hall for the “Jonny Greenwood Prom”. Jonny Greenwood, best known as a member of Radiohead but also a highly successful composer of film scores, had been asked to curate a programme of music for one of the Proms’ seasons late night Proms. This included a premiere of ‘Horro vacui’ a new composition by him. The programme was as follows:…

Voting in the Local Elections 2 May 2019

Off to the polling station to cast my vote in this year’s local elections. This time I had to do something I don’t think I have ever done before. Unfortunately, the Liberal Democrats were not able to put up a candidate in my ward this year. So my choice was only between Labour and Conservative. Given how things are at the moment I couldn’t bring myself to choose between them. The Green would have got…

Joining the People’s Vote march 23 March 2019

I’ve again taken the train into London to join another People’s Vote march. I think this is the fourth of these that I have been on, and they have grown in numbers each time. They reckon this one was over a million people.

Statue of Garuda in the British Museum

A few weeks ago I did something I haven’t done for a while and had a wander around the British Museum. I rather enjoyed coming across this serious dude. Apparently, he is the Garuda, a legendary bird-like being. In Hindu mythology he is associated with the god Vishnu acting as a vehicle or mount, and symbolises royal power and martial prowess. In Buddhist mythology the Garuda are a enormous intelligent birds that are enemies of the…
