The right choice, but a narrow one
So it is Nick Clegg and I am pleased.
I think the party has chosen the right leader from the two candidates on offer. Nick’s speech this afternoon had the right balance of emphasising liberalism, identifying the need to fix our broken politics, and looking outwards beyond the party. I hope he will continue in this vein.
Yet the narrowness of the result does suggest that he still has work to do in convincing the party, let alone the country, that his approach is the one we need. I hope he has a clear plan of how to do this and we will see some well thought out actions designed to set out his vision and stamp his authority on the party over the coming weeks and months.
But as I have said elsewhere, we cannot leave it all just to our new leader to do. We have a responsibility to help him meet the challenges the party faces.
Congratulations to Nick and let’s get on with it.
